While there are many current singers who enjoy singing tunes out of the Great American Songbook in a traditional style, others, such as the talented singer Thaïsa Olivia, prefer to move between the old and the new in their arrangements and vocal interpretations. ‘Showing a level of control and precision that’s impressive’
Thaïsa Olivia displays a distinctive talent for phrasing and interpretation on Let Go. Coupled with a deep, warm alto sound that is exceedingly pleasant to listen to. Showing a level of control and precision that’s impressive, while maintaining an unexpected warmth.
Her rendition of Cy Coleman’s “With Every Breath I Take” will probably rank as one of the finest renditions of that song outside of the Original Broadway Cast Recording.

‘Ze beschikt over een prachtig stemgeluid’
Vaste bezoekers van Yes Jazz hebben deze zangeres al eerder kunnen zien schitteren op het podium. Al in 2002, het allereerste jaar waarin de stichting startte met het organiseren van jazzoptredens, was zij te bewonderen. Afgelopen zondag stond ze met haar kwartet op het podium van het theatercafé van De Hofnar in Valkenswaard.
Thaïsa Olivia is een zangeres die het publiek verleidt vanaf de bühne. Ze doet dat met haar blik, haar bewegingen, maar vooral met haar muzikale kwaliteiten. Ze beschikt over een prachtig stemgeluid: soepel, lenig, soms fluweelzacht, maar hier en daar ook wat steviger. Ze vertelt tussen de nummers door over zichzelf of over hoe de muziek is ontstaan. Eigen composities worden afgewisseld met bestaande songs uit het jazzrepertoire, die vervolgens weer in een geheel eigen arrangement zijn gestoken. Het optreden is aantrekkelijk en aan alle kanten mooi in balans.
De muzikanten achter haar staan garant voor kwaliteit. Er zit een prettig soort van lichtheid in de begeleiding. Een lichtheid die zich heel goed verhoudt tot de stem van de zangeres. Goed is dat het trio zowel in de eerste als de tweede set ruimte krijgt voor een instrumentaal stuk. De instrumentale stukken hebben duidelijk een ander soort energie. Het daagt de muzikanten nog meer uit om te laten zien waar ze voor staan. Joost Kesselaar is een veel gevraagd slagwerker in de jazzwereld. Dat is niet voor niets. Hij schildert virtuoos met zijn brushes over de vellen. Zijn swing is superstrak. Sven Schuster, de bassist, gaat perfect mee in die swing. Opvallend mooi zijn de gestreken solo’s die hij uit zijn instrument tovert. Christian Doepke benadrukt de lichtheid in het spel. Harmonisch is het sterk wat hij doet. Zijn solo’s zijn toegankelijk, maar blijven altijd spannend.

‘(…) My first impression of Thaïsa I would therefore like to describe as a “sophisticated lady”, with a lot of respect for her audience and the timeless repertoire of the great American composers of the first half of the previous century. (…) It certainly isn’t easy to perform songs that have already been interpreted by numerous vocalists and instrumentalists for several decades in an original manner, but in this case it has been done exceptionally well. (…) Especially “Cry Me a River”, arranged by bass player Sven Schuster and Thaïsa. The extremely slow tempo, the bowed bass and the sadness and pain Thaïsa manages to evoke, turn this song into a true gem. This also applies to her original song “How Do You Know”, (…) The melody, which is very pleasant to the ear, as well as the lyrics fascinate from beginning to end. This composition triggers my curiosity towards future songs, which hopefully will flow out of her pen’.

‘An album that I will play many times.’
‘The first thing that immediately attracts attention in this production are the beautiful and unique arrangements of so-called standards, to which all band members have contributed. It certainly isn’t easy to perform songs that have already been interpreted by numerous vocalists and instrumentalists for several decades in an original manner, but in this case it has been done exceptionally well. The new arrangements fit Thaïsa like a glove, especially “Cry Me a River”, arranged by bass player Sven Schuster and Thaisa. The extremely slow tempo, the bowed bass and the sadness and pain Thaïsa manages to evoke, turn this song into a true gem. This also applies to her original song “How Do You Know”, which I consider the absolute highlight of this album. The melody, which is very pleasant to the ear, as well as the lyrics fascinate from beginning to end. This composition triggers my curiosity towards future songs, which hopefully will flow out of her pen.
The entire album demonstrates a fine balance between often passionate vocals, especially in “With Every Breath I Take” and the accompaniment, with gorgeous solos by the band members, Ed Boekee on piano, Sven Schuster on double bass and Joost Kesselaar on drums. The tempo changes in some songs ensure the listener’s alertness and add extra pizazz to renditions of well-known classics.
Last, but certainly not least, the guest role of American trumpeter Kurt Weiss, who has toured with the late great Ray Charles among others, deserves mention. His contribution on two songs definitely adds to their atmosphere and eloquence. All in all an album that I will play many times, privately as well as in ‘Jazzcorner’ and ‘Moonlight Melodies’, my radio shows for RTV Amstelveen. I wish Thaïsa a lot of success with this beautiful cd and that each buyer will enjoy listening to it as much as I do.’

‘Een avond ‘vocal jazz’ op z’n best.’
Het is al gezellig druk als je binnen komt in de theaterzaal van de Muzenval in Eersel. Op de aangeklede tafels flikkert zacht kaarslicht. Precies de goede sfeer voor een spannend jazzconcert. Op het programma staat het Thaïsa Olivia Quartet. In het programmaboekje valt te lezen dat de frontvrouw van dit kwartet al eerder het podium deelde met veel grote namen uit de jazzwereld. Ook toerde ze voor een periode van drie jaar met een close harmony trio langs Duitse theaters. De verwachtingen zijn hoog gespannen.
Het kwartet maakt de verwachtingen meer dan waar. Thaïsa beschikt over een prachtig stemgeluid dat soms fluweelzacht is, maar als het moet ook flink kan meegaan met de power van het begeleidingstrio. Prachtige ballads worden afgewisseld met up-tempo songs waar de swing vanaf spat. Opvallend fraai is het aandeel eigen composities. Ongeveer de helft van het repertoire komt uit het muzikale brein van de zangeres. Mooie songs, verpakt in frisse arrangementen. Gelukkig schuwt het kwartet ook de vernieuwing niet. Zo klinkt er bijvoorbeeld een prachtige vocale versie van ‘Cry me a river’ met begeleiding van Sven Schuster op gestreken contrabas. Christian Doepke blinkt uit in prachtig solospel. Drummer Barry Olthof zorgt voor de swing zoals die moet klinken bij deze muziek.
Het Thaïsa Olivia Quartet zorgt voor een avond vol van jazzplezier. Een avond ‘vocal jazz’ op z’n best.

‘A wonderful retro jazz vocalist’
You’d hardly guess she was not a homegrown American vocalist by the sound of her album ‘Let Go’. The musicianship is extremely American, with plenty of traditional jazz instrumentation throughout and finds Olivia scatting fast and accurately. Olivia is a wonderful retro jazz vocalist and ‘Let Go’ is a treat for fans of beautifully sung jazz.

‘Silky smooth.’
Silky smooth! Thaïsa Olivia pleasantly surprised and pleased the packed room with her spontaneous singing with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on a cold November rainy night in New Orleans. After respectfully introducing herself to the band members, they enthusiastically invited her to join them and this beautiful person wove her voice around the music intermingling Dixieland and her fresh professional silky downy voice. Impromptu singing with any unfamiliar band can often be much less than satisfying but Thaïsa’s voice blended and moved in sync with the old familiar Preservation Hall personages. Such a treat! We could do no better than hearing her more often…. Preferably here in New Orleans!

‘Singer Thaisa Olivia is a passionate interpreter of the Great American Songbook. On this cd, that repertoire is supplemented by a couple of excellent original compositions written by herself and her accompanists Ed Boekee on piano and Sven Schuster on upright bass. Joining in are Joost Kesselaar on drums and – on two tracks – Kurt Weiss on trumpet. The arrangements are skilful and elegant and performed as such by the musicians involved. The rendition of Hamilton’s ‘Cry Me a River’ is striking, with solely Sven Schuster participating on upright bass. This leads to sloshed moments in his solo, where he makes his bass moan with uncontrollable harmonics, unorthodoxally intonated blue notes and other unsual pranks. With the clear sound of her voice, technical skills and the ability to musically interpret all moods involving letting go of loved ones, Thaïsa Olivia leaves us deeply impressed with her album’.

‘A night of vocal jazz at it’s best.’
‘It’s already cozily crowded when you enter the auditorium of De Muzenval in Eersel, the Netherlands. Soft candlelight flickers on lushly decorated tables, providing exactly the right kind of ambiance for an exciting jazz concert. The program for the evening lists the Thaïsa Olivia Quartet. The booklet states that the leading lady of this quartet already shared the stage with great names from the international jazz scene, and also did an extensive three-year theatre tour in Germany with close harmony trio The Croonettes. Needless to say, expectations are high.
The quartet more than delivers the goods. Thaïsa has a gorgeous tone, occasionally silky smooth but also ready to go along with the power of her accompanying trio, when called for. Beautiful ballads take turns with up-tempo songs bursting with swing. The portion of original compositions is strikingly lovely, approximately half of the repertoire stems from the musical mind of the singer. Pretty songs, wrapped up in fresh arrangements. Fortunately, the quartet also is not afraid of revamping, witness a beautiful vocal version of ‘Cry Me a River’ accompanied by Sven Schuster on bowed upright bass. Pianist Christian Doepke excels in stunning, breathtaking solos and drummer Barry Olthof provides the swing as it should sound with this kind of music. The Thaïsa Olivia Quartet delivers an evening filled with sheer jazz fun. A night of vocal jazz at it’s best.’

Zangeres Thaïsa Olivia is een gepassioneerd vertolkster van the Great American Songbook. Op deze cd vult ze dit repertoire aan met een aantal uitstekende stukken van haar zelf en haar begeleiders toetsenist Ed Boekee en contrabassist Sven Schuster. Verder zijn drummer Joost Kesselaar en – op twee stukken – trompettist Kurt Weiss van de partij. De arrangementen zijn vakkundig en smaakvol en worden ook zodanig uitgevoerd door de betrok- ken muzikanten. Opvallend is de uitvoering van Hamilton’s ‘Cry me a River’ waarin alleen Sven Schuster meespeelt op gestreken contrabas. Dit zorgt in zijn solo voor bezopen momenten waarin hij de contrabas laat kreunen met oncontroleerbare boventonen, onorthodox geïntoneerde blue notes en ander ongebruikelijke streken. Met de heldere klank van haar stem, technische skills en vaardigheid om alle stemmingen rondom het laten gaan van geliefden te vertolken, laat Thaïsa Olivia met dit album een diepe indruk na.
